ACHIEVEMENTS

Jake Montgomery Achievements

·    Started triathlons when I was 13 years old

·    Trialed for the Sydney Junior Triathlon Academy. Based on a swim and run time trial, I was selected in the development squad in 2007. After training in racing in the development squad for a year I was moved up into the performance squad. Here I started my first draft legal racing with the elite guys in late 2008.

·    First Pro Tour race was in Forster, NSW which I raced as a 14yr old in an U23 Elite race.

·    In September 2009, I was selected into the TRINSW U23 and ITU Junior squad as a provisional athlete. Being selected into this squad gave me the opportunity to race in National events and stay in National camps.

·     In December 2009 I was selected by a NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) coach to race in the 2XU National Talent Identification (NTID) super sprint race weekend, held at the Super Sports Centre in Runaway Bay, Queensland.

·     I was also notified before the race that I was selected to participate in a National Development Camp that was held after the race weekend. This camp contained 50 of the best U19 athletes in Australia, designed to develop their skills to a national level. We had access to the best coaches in Australia and some from overseas.

·     I was selected again the next year to race the weekend and attend the camp again afterwards. In the Grand Final race of the weekend, I posted the 6th fastest time on the day and won the B grade final.

·     In January 2011, I was asked by the NSWIS coach to come down to Falls Creek, Victoria with his squad and the Victorian Institute of Sport squad to attend a training camp for 10 days at altitude. This was a great opportunity to train in an environment like this and to train with such a high level of athletes. Australian running champion Craig Motram was also staying with us to provide running sessions for the squads. Over the 10 days we did around 160+km of running, 40+km of swimming but not much cycling.

·     Since February 2010 I have been training by myself as I was in my senior years of high school and could not commit to traveling to training sessions. So I have been doing all my training from out the door except from driving to the local swim pool. During this time I have made major improvement in my times and placing in races. I have just finished my HSC year and now have the opportunity to train with the NSWIS squad for future racing and training which will hopefully one day lead to selection in the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

·     I have high goals set for my long term career in Triathlons. My main goal is to represent Australia at the Olympics and I would also love to race the Hawaiian Ironman one day.

·     Through school sport I have…

*Made it to state for swimming, cross country and athletics every
  year since year 7.
*Made it to Nationals for Cross Country in 2010.
*Broke a 3000m run record at district athletics, stood for 28years.
*Made it to Nationals for Triathlon 3x 2008/2010/2011.

·     I have also raced at Worlds Age Group in 2009 and 2011 where I placed top 5 in both events.
·     Raced at Oceania Championships in New Zealand 2011

Have plans to get into University at Wollongong this year to study and travel and race internationally in 2 years time.

  • Travelled Europe for 3 and a half months racing as a professional Junior
  • I have also been apart of the Illawarra Academy of Sport Individual Athlete Program
